Our webinar “Business Opportunities in Kenya: Maritime and Blue Economy” was nothing short of inspiring! Our thanks go to our incredible line-up of speakers who shared their insights on this vital and growing area of opportunity including:

Amb. Nancy Karigithu – Advisor of the Blue Economy, Executive Office of the President of Kenya

Douglas Lang – Scottish Maritime Cluster

James Mwangi – Gatsby Africa

Faraaz Charania – Best Energy Kenya

From harnessing the potential of offshore renewable energy to exploring sustainable fishing practices and port development, the discussions were as rich as the oceans themselves. A massive thank you to our speakers for their informative and thought-provoking contributions—your expertise made this session a true deep dive into the sector’s future.

📌 Spotlight on Kenya:

 We heard about:

  • How the blue economy goes beyond sector silos including value add to existing developments, future use including wind energy, luxury tourism and marines and responding to challenges

  • Sport fishing and tourism with Malinda being the only place that offers the best chance of a ‘fantasy slam’

  • Seaweed cultivation across the 15 sites in Kenya suitable for harvesting seaweed and establishing seaweed farms as well as new industrial fisheries harvesting methods

  • Ship management, building, cruise tourism in line with port development and the green transformation

  • How East Africa is the next growth frontier for caged tilapia farming with the large and widening supply gap for fish in the region and the promising opportunities

  • How Gatsby Africa has supported feasibility studies and seed capitals to help establish a large scale fish farm which, in turn, has helped increase the mass of skilled workers in the sector

  • The attractive commercial performance to help with the unfulfilled latent demand in East Africa with the population likely to double in the next 30 years

  • The importance of clean and green energy use in these sectors along with building an environment that is more energy-efficient and more sustainable

Closer to home, Scotland’s maritime and blue economy industries offer a wealth of expertise and innovation. Organisations like the Scottish Maritime Cluster are championing collaboration across the sector, driving advancements in areas like shipbuilding, marine technology and offshore energy.

Thanks to the team from the British Chamber of Commerce Kenya for your partnership, support and input; it’s always a pleasure!
